Mother of Exiles
I bet quite a few of you are wondering about the name for this tutorial. It is taken from Emma Lazarus'poem. Most people remember only the verses immortalized on the base of Liberty Enlightening the World aka the Statue of Liberty. I really want to thank both our park service and all those individuals who maintain informational sites on our beautiful lady. I couldn't have corrected some image problems without all your help! This image is created from a photo I took locally of a replica of the Statue itself. Yes, I do own the copyright on my photo and the image I created from my photo. Please do keep that in mind. I wrote this tutorial using PSP7, you may be able to use version 6 as well.

You will need my sel files and various image files.
This is a personal thank you to Sue. She provided the arms and legs for me. They are included in the supplies with her blessing.
No outside filters are needed for this image.
Before we get started, the image size is HUGE. I wanted to have the option of choosing various sizes for this image. Be ready to empty your clipboard and command history frequently. Save often. Doing these chores will allow the .sel files to work properly and prevent PSP from crashing. You were warned.....
You may find it easier to use the brush to fill small areas.
- Open a new transparent 792 x 2004 16.7 million color image. (yup... huge!)

- Repeat steps 8 and 9 for 06b-d selections.
- Add new layer, Shoe Top. Load 07aMWshoetop.sel and flood with #427F6B. Select none. Add the same inner bevel.
- Add new layer, Torch Arm. Load 07bMWtorcharm.sel and paste the torcharm.psp into the selection. Select none.
- Add new layer, Flame. Load 08MWflame.sel and flood with White. Apply Effects->Texture->Sculpture and choose the settings shown. Select none.
- Add new layer, Torch Base. Load 09MWtorchbase.sel and flood with #427F6B. Select none.

- Add new layer, Head. Leave alone for now.
- Add new layer, Dress. Load 11MWdress.sel and flood with #427F6B. Select none.
- Add new layer, Creases. Load 12MWcreases.sel and flood with #1F6E56. Select none.
- Add new layer, Tablet Top. Load 13MWtablettop.sel and flood with #427F6B. Select none.
- Add new layer, Tablet Sides. Load 14MWtabletsides.sel and flood with #1F6E56. Select none.
- Add new layer, Text. Load 15MWtext.sel and flood with #427F6B. Select none. Same inner bevel.
- Add new layer, Tablet Hand. Load 16MWtablethand.sel and paste the tablethand.psp file into selection. Select none.
- Paste the head.psp file onto the Head layer so it lines up properly with the dress. (Bottom left crown ray should butt up to arm.)
- Now use the retouch tool set to RGB Darken to make the edge of her dress have some dimension. I went ahead and darkened around her fingers, back dress, base and arm as well. Choose the numerical settings you feel comfortable using. In some areas, I changed my brush size as needed. Zooming into the area makes it easier to do this part as well.
- Now, using the Retouch set to RGB Lighten, lighten the area between the folds in her gown. This tricks your eyes into seeing more dimension in her gown. I also lightened her arm and the base. Take your time and you might be surprised at your own skill. If you are comparing the title image and the image below, they are 2 different images. I went over different areas a bit more in the image below. Don't panic if your image is "weathered" differently than mine.
- You will need to resize this image before sending to any groups.
- You may also need to move the torch and torch base slightly right.
